The
Rushden Fete and sock commemoration!
The
school children of Rushden school 100 years ago, who knitted socks for the
troops at the Front, would have loved the 2014 Rushden fete which was a
‘sock’ commemoration! All put together by our Fete ‘coordinator
extraordinaire’ Karen Pettyfer.
We
had sock bunting, sock games, some (frankly atrocious) coloured socks
worn on various parts of the anatomy and, naturally a sock competition
which was won by Mary Glaze from Wallington. In the village hall was a
copy of a very poignant letter from one Gunner Holmes thanking one of the
children for the socks he had received…somewhere in France.
The
day dawned fine and stayed like that banishing thoughts of the last two
distinctly soggy fetes.
All
the usual stalls were in evidence including delicious teas and a BBQ
with a refreshing barrel of ale to help cool you down!
We
had two live performances, Gabriel Taylor on keyboard and two
‘sets’ fromour fete nightingale Ellis Pettyfer who played
and sang to perfection.
The
fete drew to a close with a spirited tug of war from the younger fete
goers.
With
so many events taking place in the region there was always the
danger that numbers would be down, but in the event there was a good
steady flow through…apparently only 5 or 6 pints left in the barrel as
confirmation!
Better
still, and despite the competition, a princely sum of £3,714.57 was raised
to help swell the coffers of the village hall and church.
