**STOP PRESS** A fantastic £564.20 was raised at the Village Christmas Concert.

Rushden performers played to a packed church at the Village Christmas Concert on Sun 19th November. It was very much a family affair with both parents and children, husbands and wives taking part and everyone said how much they had enjoyed it. We would like to thank everyone who took part and all those who helped afterwards with the delicious nibbles, wine and washing up (not so delicious!) in the Village Hall.

It was an evening of "Gourmet Delight" and good company. The Seven Sumos looking remarkable slim produced an outstandingly good meal at Rushden Village Hall on Saturday 14th October. The evening started with champagne and canapés and then progressed via pea and prosciutto soup, pigeon breasts in quince sauce, carbonade of beef, raspberry cheesecake and cheese savouries to melt in the mouth home made truffles. All washed down with copious drafts of wine. We must congratulate all those who took part in producing the meal, Victoria and Georgie for helping serve it and thanks also go to Victoria for her sterling work in the kitchen washing up. The grand total of £1,000.00 was raised for the Church and the Village Hall.

We thank all the team for their hard work to make the evening so special. We look forward to the next one. Click here for some photos (with thanks to Jo Bryant and John Dingemans).

The Rushden Fete took place on 3 June in glorious sunshine. To see some photos click her.

Marine Ecology in the Phillipines

Gen Broad certainly learned about roof raising during her work with marine ecology in the Philippines as she lost her roof to typhoons several times.  She also witnessed the eruption of a local volcano.

Whilst in the Philippines, she worked with local people on bio diversity and encouraged them to look after their environment by stopping dynamiting and cyaniding fish. In between, she discovered a new bird, the Calayan Rail.

Now she works in Essex, where she says she continues to spread the message that our world needs protecting.

On Tuesday 16th May, Nick Launder resigned from the Parish Council after 11 years of extremely dedicated and hard work. We would like to thank him for all the time he has given to village affairs during this time. Now we hope he enjoys his new leisure time.

We would like to congratulate Sarah Wylie, former resident of Rushden, on her marriage on Saturday 27th May, to Robert Ellis. In spite of a rainy start to the day it was a gloriously happy event and the bride looked radiant. We wish them both every happiness.

CONGRATULATIONS LOTTIE - On the 30th March, in the presence of Prince Phillip and in the magnificent surroundings of St. James’s Palace, Lotty Packman was presented with her gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.  To achieve this, recipients have to successfully complete tasks under the headings of Service, Expedition, Skill, Physical and Residential.  In Lotty’s case, this included taking part in a cycling expedition in Brittany, helping to care for 12 year old handicapped twins and increasing her proficiency in both singing and hockey.  In addition, she spent time in Costa Rica teaching and working as part of a turtle monitoring team.

Lotty’s next challenge is to lead the Durham University Coral Awareness and Research Expedition.  This is a project in which a team of six students will be spending two months this summer in the Philippines carrying out diving surveys on the coral reefs to collect valuable data for conservation purposes.  They will also be working with the local community and dive shop operators to raise awareness of, and seek solutions to, the threats posed to the reefs in this area.

To help with fund raising, Lotty has organised and will shortly be taking part in a 24 hour ‘Rowathon’ and any help with sponsorship would be very much appreciated.  The team need to raise a total of £12,000 in order to be able to carry out this valuable work and are desperately in need of more funds.  If you think that you, your company or anyone you know may be able to provide further sponsorship or any form of financial support for this worthwhile expedition, Lotty would be delighted to hear from you at c.e.packman@durham.ac.uk or on 01763 288243.

The table top sale that took place at the Village Hall saw lots of activity with an enormous range of items on sale. A fantastic £258 was made at the sale. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make it such a success...

Lorraine Summers saw a grand send off in Rushden Village Hall on Sunday 8th January after she took her last service in the Church. Villagers gathered to say goodbye and wish her well in her new parish of Kimpton and Ayot St Lawrence. She was presented with a leaving cheque whilst parishioners enjoyed a shared lunch.

Her licensing took place on 27 February 2006.

Chris Whitton's Jordanian Evening proved to be a gastronomic experience for all. 15 courses meant that several of us were surreptitiously loosening buttons by the end of the evening. The event raised over £600 for Village Hall funds and this was swelled by a generous donation from Crump's the butchers who supplied the beef. The Bedouin jewellery proved a great attraction. Thank you to all who helped make the evening such a success.

Dawn and Gillian would like to announce their Civil Partnership (after 36 years about time we say!) We all wish them every happiness.

Today, 1800 children will be born infected with Aids. These are some of the statistics that Sue Jagelman of Save the Children gave us in her talk to the WI entitled Aids – the Future on Thursday 19th January at Rushden Village Hall. At present there are 14 million children orphaned by Aids and this is expected to rise to 25 million by 2010. So what is the answer? Well, in the words of a well known politician, “Education. Education. Education.”

Save the Children is helping workers acquire the skills to spread the message around the world , from Wales to Mozambique via Brazil. It is only by teaching the young that we can protect them from the disease as they reach adulthood.
